Dallol
Dallol is one of the most unique and otherworldly places on Earth, located in the Danakil Depression of northeastern Ethiopia. Known for its extreme heat, vibrant colors, and surreal landscapes, Dallol holds the record for the highest average year-round temperature. The area is dominated by hot springs, sulfur fields, and salt flats that create an array of striking colors—yellows, greens, and oranges—due to the volcanic activity and mineral deposits. Dallol feels like stepping onto an alien planet, with its bubbling acid pools, bizarre rock formations, and salt deposits stretching as far as the eye can see.
Afdera
Afdera is a town located in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia, known for its extreme desert climate and proximity to Lake Afrera (also called Lake Giulietti), a hypersaline lake. Lake Afrera is famous for its salt mining, as salt deposits are abundant around the lake and harvested by the local Afar people. The process involves traditional methods, where salt slabs are cut from the lakebed, dried, and then transported by camel caravans or trucks.
