Harar Jugol: The Walled City
Harar is often referred to as the “City of Saints” and is recognized for its rich Islamic history and vibrant culture. The old walled city, known as Harar Jugol, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest cities in Ethiopia. Walking through its narrow alleys, you’ll discover over 80 mosques and shrines, along with traditional homes that reflect a blend of Ethiopian and Islamic architectural styles. Harar is also famous for its unique relationship with wild hyenas, which are fed by local ‘Hyena Men’ in a fascinating nightly ritual.
